One-Stop Emergency Diagnostics: Faster Answers
See how integrated imaging, laboratory testing and emergency care can reduce delays when you need an urgent diagnosis.
When urgent symptoms need clear answers
An acute symptom or sudden change in a chronic condition can leave you needing answers without traveling between clinics, imaging centers and hospital departments. One-stop emergency diagnostics combine medical evaluation, advanced imaging and laboratory testing in one emergency facility. Here is how that model reduces handoffs, what testing may be available and what happens if you need observation or hospital admission at PrimeCare Emergency Center.
Understanding One-Stop Emergency Diagnostics vs. Fragmented Hospital Care
In a fragmented diagnostic process, your examination, blood testing and imaging may happen in different departments. Each step can add another queue, staff handoff or trip across a hospital campus. If a clinic cannot perform the required test, you may instead be referred to an outside imaging center or emergency department.
PrimeCare Emergency Center takes a consolidated approach. Our Arlington facility has a certified laboratory, CT scanning, digital X-ray and ultrasound under one roof. Your physician can order appropriate tests, review the findings and decide on treatment without sending you elsewhere for an urgent scan or emergency blood work.
Co-location matters because an emergency diagnosis may depend on several findings. Severe abdominal pain, for example, may require an examination, blood tests and imaging. A head injury may call for neurological evaluation and a CT scan. Nearby resources let clinicians compare results as they become available.
Research published through the National Library of Medicine found that integrated diagnostic pathways can reduce the time from physician assessment to a diagnostic decision from several hours to under 60 to 90 minutes. Your visit time will still depend on your symptoms, required tests and medical urgency.
At PrimeCare, our goal is to start evaluation within 15 minutes of arrival and deliver many available on-site results in minutes rather than hours. Patients with the most serious symptoms are prioritized immediately, so timing varies according to medical need.
The Power of Integrated On-Site Lab Testing and Advanced Imaging
The value of an integrated facility is not simply having tests available. It is giving the emergency physician different tools to answer related clinical questions during the same visit.
High-definition CT scanning
A CT scan creates detailed cross-sectional views of bones, soft tissue and blood vessels. It can reveal certain internal injuries, bleeding or fractures that may not appear on a standard X-ray. PrimeCare’s on-site GE LightSpeed CT scanner is available around the clock, avoiding an outside referral when the physician determines that an urgent scan is needed.
Digital X-rays
Digital X-rays are commonly used to evaluate suspected fractures, dislocations, chest symptoms and some foreign objects. PrimeCare’s digital equipment produces images rapidly and emits up to 80% less radiation than traditional X-ray machines. Clinicians can enlarge the images to examine difficult areas.
Real-time ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionizing radiation and can display organs and tissue movement in real time. Depending on your symptoms, it may help evaluate abdominal, vascular or pregnancy-related concerns. PrimeCare’s capabilities include carotid Doppler ultrasound for assessing blood flow through the carotid arteries. Learn more about our on-site imaging services.
Certified laboratory testing
Imaging shows structure, while laboratory results can identify signs of infection, blood loss, glucose problems and electrolyte imbalance. Our certified on-site laboratory can process complete blood counts, metabolic panels, electrolyte levels, urinalysis, glucose tests and pregnancy tests. Rapid flu, mono and strep testing is also available when clinically appropriate.
Because samples remain on site, our clinical team does not have to rely on routine commercial laboratory schedules for acute decisions. Our laboratory services support emergency evaluation and are not a substitute for multi-day outpatient reference testing.

Why Urgent Care and Hospital ERs Differ From the Consolidated Model
Urgent care can be suitable for many minor illnesses and injuries. Its limits become important when a condition may require advanced imaging, emergency laboratory analysis, continuous monitoring or stabilization. Many urgent care centers lack CT scanners and the laboratory depth needed to assess potentially serious chest, abdominal, neurological or traumatic symptoms.
If urgent care cannot rule out a dangerous condition, you may be sent to an emergency department for another registration and assessment. Tests from the first location may not answer the emergency physician’s questions, so some steps may be repeated.
Hospital emergency departments have extensive diagnostic, surgical and inpatient resources. They also manage ambulance arrivals, major trauma and patients requiring intensive care, while imaging and laboratory departments may be serving the rest of the hospital.
A study available through the National Library of Medicine reported average intervals of 4.2 to 5.9 hours between an initial CT order and the radiologist’s final report in crowded hospital emergency departments. That finding does not describe every hospital visit, but it illustrates how departmental volume can affect turnaround.
PrimeCare bridges the gap between a basic clinic and a crowded hospital ER. We are a state-certified freestanding emergency center with board-certified emergency physicians, advanced imaging, an in-house laboratory and observation suites. Our guide to freestanding and hospital ER care explains when each setting may be appropriate.
A freestanding ER does not replace every hospital service. PrimeCare does not perform complex inpatient surgery or provide prolonged inpatient care on site. We diagnose, stabilize and determine the safest next level of care.
From Rapid Diagnosis to Observation or Direct Hospital Transfer
Once results are available, the physician decides whether you can be treated and discharged, need continued observation or require inpatient or specialist care. Faster results support an earlier decision, but the destination depends on your diagnosis and stability.
PrimeCare is licensed by the State of Texas to provide observation for up to 23 hours. This option is for patients who need more monitoring or treatment than a short emergency visit provides but do not yet require hospital admission. It may be appropriate for chest pain, asthma flare-ups, fainting, dehydration or concussion when the physician considers observation necessary.
During observation, our clinical team can track your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen level. Your response to treatment and any follow-up findings help the physician decide whether you can safely return home or need a higher level of care.
If testing identifies a condition requiring emergency surgery, intensive care, prolonged admission or specialist treatment, PrimeCare coordinates transfer to a local Arlington hospital. Our staff communicates with the receiving facility and sends relevant medical records, imaging and stabilization details.
A major stroke, serious internal injury or surgical abdominal emergency may require resources available only at a full-service hospital or specialist center. Rapid diagnostics do not remove that need; they identify it and provide clinical information for the receiving team.
What to Expect During Your Emergency Diagnostic Visit
Your visit begins with an assessment of your symptoms and medical urgency. We aim to start evaluation within 15 minutes of arrival while immediately prioritizing life-threatening conditions. Bring identification, insurance information, a medication list and relevant diagnoses if they are readily available, but do not delay emergency care to collect paperwork.
- A clinical team member assesses your symptoms, vital signs and relevant medical history.
- The emergency physician examines you and orders the laboratory or imaging tests needed for the immediate concern.
- Blood, urine or swab samples are processed in our on-site laboratory, while ordered CT, X-ray or ultrasound imaging is completed within the facility.
- The physician reviews the findings alongside your examination and explains the recommended treatment or next level of care.
- You are discharged with instructions, moved into observation or transferred to a hospital according to your clinical needs.
Emergency testing is not free because it is performed in one location. PrimeCare is an out-of-network freestanding emergency facility. Our rates are comparable to a hospital emergency room, and we may charge professional and facility fees. We make our complete charge list available as required by Texas House Bill 2041; our insurance information explains what patients should review.
Emergency billing protections may apply depending on your health plan. The No Surprises Act and Texas disclosure explains protections for emergency services from out-of-network providers, including limits on certain patient cost-sharing and balance billing. Coverage still depends on your plan, deductible, copayment and coinsurance, so review all notices and contact your insurer with questions about your explanation of benefits.
Before leaving, make sure you understand your diagnosis, medications, warning signs and follow-up instructions. If results are inconclusive, ask what further testing may be needed and when to seek emergency care again. PrimeCare also offers no-cost follow-up visits to support recovery after your emergency visit.
